Ignition Interlock Device

Madison County Ignition Interlock Device Lawyers

What Is An Ignition Interlock Device?

The Breath Alcohol Interlock Ignition Device (BAIID) program is a state-run program in Illinois designed to grant people limited driving privileges to people convicted of DUI during the period that their driver’s license is suspended or revoked.

As part of the program, a breath-alcohol monitoring device is installed in your vehicle. The driver must blow into the device to use the vehicle; the device will not allow the vehicle to operate if the driver’s BAC registers at .05 or above. Participants in the BAIID program are prohibited from operating any vehicle other than the one in which the interlock device has been installed.

Penalties For Violating The Conditions Of The BAIID Program

If you participate in the Illinois BAIID program and you are caught driving a vehicle without the device, this is a very serious offense. Many drivers do not understand that while a first-time DUI is considered a Class A misdemeanor, driving a vehicle without a BAIID device when you are in the program is considered a Class 4 felony. It is punishable by imprisonment of up to three years and fines up to $25,000. The penalty is the same if you are caught tampering with the device to get around using it.
